What Happens in a Counselling Session?

Counselling is like going for a ride.

You, the counsellee, are in the driver’s seat.

The counsellor is in the passenger seat.

While driving, you’ll have your eyes on the road, and share what you see and would like to draw my attention to –

As I listen to you, and drive along I may notice things you may have missed.

Through the counselling process, we explore and discover new things about you, your relationships with others and with God.

What Is Counselling About?

Essentially, it is about learning more about yourself and your life by asking questions, like:

  • Who am I?
  • What’s special, unique and beautiful about me?
  • The situation that I am facing now is difficult, upsetting and painful. How did it come about? Will my life ever become ‘normal’ again?
  • What must I do to overcome obstacles, hurts and difficulties?
  • Etc.

Is Counselling Safe?

Yes.  The Confidentiality Agreement makes it so. What is shared in confidence remains confidential and will not be shared with anybody else, without your permission.

Will Counselling Be Helpful For Me?

The benefits of counselling are numerous, including:

  • gain personal insights,
  • learn new behaviours,
  • learn ways of coping with issues,
  • develop communication skills, and
  • enjoying a more content life.

That said, the counselling process may also

  • evoke strong emotions or difficult memories,
  • change the way you relate to others, and
  • change your self-perspective.

Be encouraged to consider both benefits and risks of counselling.

Grace Based Counselling aims to nurture:

“But they that hope in the Lord shall renew their strength..”

Isaiah 40

“So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid”

Hebrews 13

“He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds.”

Psalm 147

“You are happy [blessed] when you get your inside world – your mind and heart – put right.”

Can I Talk About Absolutely Anything during Counselling?

Yes.
